- Dying, more than any other life event, presents us with the opportunity to grow, to change, to love, to appreciate and ultimately to experience the meaning of our existence. Our death is the completion of our life's mission. The setting sun may have lost much of its early brightness but this has unexpected rewards for it can, often for the first time, be clearly seen. It seems paradoxical, but truth and the mystery of Who am I? are revealed in the final moments of our life. MICHAEL BARBATO

Death is not waiting for us at the end of a long road. Death is always with us, in the marrow of every passing moment. She is the secret teacher hiding in plain sight, helping us to discover what matters most. https://thoughtcatalog.com/frank-ostaseski/2017/07/5-things-death-can-teach-us-about-living-life-to-the-fullest/

This Safe Home Visiting training is as result of the collaborative efforts of Calvary Kogarah and 3 Bridges staff which can be used for training in regards to safe work practise for staff and volunteers working in the community setting.
- After Part 1, what can go wrong? How to experience Safer Home visits: Part 1- what can go wrong
- What are potential risks?
- How to experience Safe Home visits part 2 – Good home visit:
- What did she do differently that reduced the risks?
- Who is volunteer’s contact person that they inform when they visit a client and then reports when they have left the home
- Know safe practises regarding :-
- your egress from the home, car keys within reach
- who is in the home when you visit
- pets / smoking
- Safe word: - if staff / volunteer does not phone contact by the agreed time of their leaving the clients home, the contact person phones to check if they are OK. If the staff/volunteer needs help, Calvary Kogarah uses a “safe word” in the sentence which prompts the contact person to ask a closed question e.g. ‘do you need help?’
- What to do in the event of a medical emergency? Who to contact?
- Discuss boundaries of the role for a community volunteer eg
- The scope of tasks and responsibilities within which staff/volunteer perform in their role, so only performing agreed tasks
- What happens when boundaries get blurred eg. ‘thinking of them as a friend rather than assigned client’ etc (refer to boundaries article for volunteers working in Palliative Care)
- Not giving out personal phone numbers
- Confidentiality – what to share with staff
- Debrief with Supervisor / Mgr / CoOrdinator
